Maker Movement v2

Welcome everyone! This post is part of my wider series on how to implement low-code not just from a technology and process perspective, but also for a people enablement and adoption perspective to truly maximise value from the platform - This post gives an overview of the structured approach I’ve defined and how I’m breaking down my blog posts
Holistic Low-Code Enablement - Blog structure and navigation — EmPOWER Your World

In my last post on ‘Share’ I mentioned that on evaluating how sharing takes place across all steps of the ‘Maker Movement’ identified that there was opportunity to simplify the model.

I’ve mentioned previously that although the primary focus of this blog started as the Microsoft Power Platform the model was actually applicable across all sorts of activities, both technology enablement and adoption, and any other change. With that recognition I’m going to rename the ‘Maker Movement’ to the ‘Enablement Engine’ (to both reflect it’s broader applicability across all types of behavioural changes, but also to ensure it still had a silly alliterative consultancy sounding name! 😁)

The next key area I’ve started exploring its use is in the expansibility of Microsoft Copilot. The lovely Kevin McDonnall and I have submitted a session to speak at Scottish Summit connected to this. If our session is accepted we’ll be speaking about bringing together Centres of Excellence and Centres of Enablement and how they relate to deploying, enablement of organisations, building adoption, and maximising value through Copilot!

There will be more on this in future posts but to plant the seeds with you on how it’s transferable let’s start thinking about use of Copilots and GPTs through a prompting example…

Establish Behaviours

Leaders - Our goal is to change leadership awareness, knowledge, empowerment of their teams. We increase their understanding the value of using Copilot, the importance of structuring prompts effectively to get quality results, examples of how people from their part of the organisation have used them and the impact they’ve made. We want them to take this knowledge and inspire and encourage others in their team to also start learning and using the tools.

People - We help people across the organisation to be inspired to start using Copilots themselves. We want them to hear stories of ‘people like them’ (similar roles, similar levels of organisation) who are already using prompting to extend their knowledge, to connect topics together, to gain insights from different perspectives than their own, to make themselves more efficient and effective, and to help them believe that they can also do it, and understand how those people started and owned their own development and the impact that it had to their jobs, success, recognition, or careers.

Enable Behaviours

Educate - We provide a framework of learning resources in a portal to help people start learning in a structured way, we want to educate them on their responsibilities and the governance requirements so may run some training sessions to introduce people to prompting, how to structure them, and how to interact with them to refine them.

We want to help them learn through each other and the relationships they can build both within their organisation and externally, either directly or through the LinkedIn posts, blogs, YouTube videos, from people creating content so we’ll share links and resources to build the learning muscle to go and look in other places for knowledge too.

We want them to experiment and solve problems. To win and succeed, to learn from failure and challenges. To integrate prompting and using GPTs and Copilots into their daily work and a common tool in their toolbox so we’ll encourage them to just start and to realise that trying, hitting challenges, failing, persevering and succeeding is all part of the growth mindset learning journey.

Solve Problems - We give people the understanding and capability to know how to use prompts to recognise potential opportunities, how to navigate appropriate governance (where it’s needed), how to break down a process and map Copilot (and other tools) to it to design an architecture, data model, user experience, and then create their solution.

We want to give them a buzz from the first use of Copilot to give them confidence that they CAN prompt! But also they CAN extend Copilots! They CAN create their own GPTs (currently only if they have a personal M365 Copilot Pro license)! They CAN operate in a world of AI and AREN’T being left behind!

Echo Behaviours

Celebrate - We look, explore, seek, and talk to everyone and anyone we can find who is using Copilots and prompting and want to shout about them and the amazing work they’re doing to own their own development, forge their own path, sieze empowerment, solve problems, improve their work life, and develop their careers!

They’re demonstrating the new behaviours that we want to establish and we want to give kudos and recognition to a broad audience. This isn’t just to applause their Copilot journey. This is to educate, increase understanding, and inspire others to have a broader perspective of what we mean by Copilot and that them starting to adopt AI with a growth mindset can be as tiny as using a prompt in ChatGPT to learn more about a topic or how it relates to an activity they do today (e.g. ‘Please give me a basic overview of Generative AI and give me some ideas how this could help me do my job as a Laboratory Analyst in a Quality Control Lab. For each idea provide a header, a brief description, and a table with up to 5 rows with the idea, how it applies, the value associated with it, and a link to any resources’)

Shout loud, be proud, shout broad across multiple appropriate comms channels. These tools and capabilities can apply to anyone and everyone so we want to make them all aware and inspired to start exploring themselves!

Ensemble / Enterprise

Community - This continues to be the hub where everything comes together and starts to shape and enable the culture of sharing that we want to establish. It’s here we share information, share stories, share links and resources, share questions, share answers. No matter how small or big!

We start the ball rolling by getting those existing explorers into our community and us putting those pieces of information on what Copilot is, does, and can be, and top tips to help people start small, or FAQs out there and asking the opinion of our members.

Where we want to get to is to encourage more and more people into our community who are intrigued and interested in learning more. We want them to feel that there truly is no stupid question and that they will always get an answer and some help, or pointing to the resources where they can find these basic entry points and that we all learn together. The person asking about what Copilot is and how they can start feels good as they feel encouraged and supported. The person answering feels good because they’re helping others and building their recognition as an SME.

No longer is ‘Knowledge is Power… The SHARING of knowledge is Power!’ - Let’s use the Enablement Engine to improve the lives of as many people as possible!

Community is where the magic happens! Embrace it and grow it! 🤩
